Progress Productions deliver quality above quantity and no exception whatsoever is made on this compilation.

CW aka Joakim Thureby is a name we´ve already known since the early 90s. The Swedish synth-pop project has already released an amazing number of full lengths and maxis, but has been never able to fully convince me. I personally think that they´ve been too much under the influence of the leading synth-pop giant (cf. Depeche Mode). "Freedom of choice" sounds as a milestone in their career, adding a particular release in the discography of CW! It for sure all remains pop-minded, but full of impressive and refreshing techno vibes. It´s a real pleasure and lust to discover the "new" ultra-danceable CW, merging good old pop elements together with impressive techno dance vibes and carrying house tunes. One of my absolute favorite cuts entitled "Putting flowers" even gains the border of pure acid filtered structures. It?s definitely harder and club-minded, but for sure more personal and efficient! The techno influences create a remarkable harmony with the pop roots of this band. Several songs like "Freedom of choice", "Clay in my hands", "Where are you" and "Spotlight" are one after one great pieces of refreshing electronics. The 2nd part of the album moves a bit back into the usual forms of the style, but still contains interesting elements like the trip hop rhythmic on "Wiseman", the Apoptygma Berzerk sounding "Love insurance" and the catchy, elaborated and powerful pop style of "Supernova". The way of singing remains definitely 100% poppy and has been reinforced and alternated by remarkable (mainly) female and male backing vocals. The best surprise I ever get from Children Within! (DP:8 CLJ:7/8)DP.

Freedom of choice
After a long long silence Swedish synthpop trio Children Within returning with a brand new (limited, I think) album that sees them developing a new style that relies heavily on modern dance & light techno styles although the song structures prove that the old synthpop elements haven't been totally forgotten.
This approach pays dividends throughout with tracks such as "Spotlight" & the techno-influenced "Where Are You" proving two early highlights, along with the superb "Clay In My Hands" which, in terms of power & dynamics would give any EBM band a run for their money & while the Sash-like touches that grace "Butterfly" do hint at a possible crossover appeal into the popular dance scene Children Within set their sights far higher than such simple tastes & achieve their aims with ease! The ballads "Connected To Each Other" & "You Shine On Me" both demonstrate the band's emotional side, packing a strong heartfelt punch with female backing vocals ably complimenting Joakim Thureby in both cases. Hopefully the fact that the band's songwriting skills are still much in evidence mean that their harcore synthpop following won't be too alienated by this new style although any that are can take some solace in the old-skool analogue stylings of "Restless Mind" which shows these Electroclash pretenders how it's done & the superb "Love Insurance" which adds more imposing beats & gritty guitar into the mix.
Quite why the equally superb new wave-flavoured remix is a hidden extra at the end is something of a mystery but it hardly matters when all is said & done, they're both excellent as is this superb album which shows the Swedes on typically top form.
